It is worse in present tense fan-writers though. It exaggerates the worst parts of fanfic and downplays the best. Think of it like the dark side of the force, quicker, easier, more seductive but ultimately less powerful and doomed to self-defeat.

Exactly!

With past tense, some people try or at least they just write vignettes.

With present tense, there's the "This is going fast! Feel the tension! Let's jump to the good part now!" (that usually isn't that good) and so makes it worse than usual more frequently. That's specially common in longer stories.

It's certainly a less melodramatic reference.
