I don't doubt that happens in some fandoms, but I'm not entirely convinced it's the case for all of them. In the fandom I'm currently in there's quite a few comments left on AO3.

Though frankly I rarely visit FFN these days because in the last few fandoms I've been in there's been a slew of canon character/OC stuff, and while I don't begrudge anyone the ability to write it, I have no interest in it. I prefer AO3's search system, too.
