...what was so bad about the protagonist?

Besides the fact that he was dumb and fell in love with a robot and wanted to save her. I do not and never will sympathize with "android love", in any of the old or recent films that have this odd fetish for it. It's just dumb.

But the guy in this movie, I don't recall him being creepy or anything, just a nerd who falls in love with a robot and wants to save her.

The guy who designed the robots to be sexualized fetish items was creepy, but at the same time, the "women" were just robots in reality so, meh?

You mean, aside from the voyeurism, putting Ava on some post-human pedestal, and never really considering that she might have her own agenda that doesn't involve him?
