50. ...you do realize that the bookstore employees will not be mocking you for being a weeaboo (we could care less about that), but mocking you behind your back for just being asshat, right?

I think you mean you couldn't care less. I suggest you should take a look at some of the books you sell and learn a bit about language.

It's a lost negative. If you're not American, you might not recognize it as such, though, since it's primarily American in use. One sample explanation of it.

I still think it's teh dumb. I say "couldn't" myself. It might be regional (lots of American idioms are).

I am also very uptight about lost -ed (e.g. "whip cream" vs. "whipped cream"), but then, even I say "ice cream", and every such mutation had to start somewhere.

Yeah I'm British :) Guess it was American this is the only place I've seen people use it. Putting the phrase into Google does come up with some interesting results. I'm not really convinced by the sarcasm justification it might have been that way originally, I'm pretty sure most people who use it don't have that intention, but then again I don't think sarcasm ever really works on the internet.

If not sarcasm, I think there's at least exasperation there -- the phrase (whether "I couldn't care less" or "I could care less!") is definitely pretty weighted towards a "FINE, WHATEVER" thing, which means any edge of sarcasm it picks up is going to be pretty difficult to separate from the use generally.

I stand corrected. But your Grammar Nazi ways only prove my point. Just sayin'.

No grammar for you, one year!

(Anonymous) 2008-02-01 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I'm no Grammar Nazi, this is the only thing that annoys me people can misuse there/their/they're, its/it's, misspell words forget to use capitals and I won't care as long as it's easily readable. I just refuse to accept this turn of phrase as it makes no sense and it just seems illogical. I really can't see why people use it, it doesn't really make it quicker to write as adding a n't or not doesn't take long, so there's no benefit.

I'm not sure what you mean what point did I prove? I just happened to be browsing the comments saw what you'd written and felt compelled to point out the mistake, am I missing something?

[identity profile] blinkidybah.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's called an idiom.

*high-five* Former employee.

[identity profile] andy-longwood.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
*high fives* employee in general.

I don't care what a person's reasons are for being whatever kind of asshat they're being. If they're being an asshat, that's enough to invoke a thumbs-down from me, no matter if they're doing it by squealing loudly about how something is OMG KAWAII or telling someone that they're mentally insufficient for using the K-word.

Seriously. Fighting fucktardation with fucktardation doesn't solve anything.
