27. Wait, what do you mean you hate 'strong Black women' stereotypes in 'real life'? You mean you hate REAL strong Black women? That's kinda wrong... I don't think you're trying to be racist (stereotypes are bad, duh) but your wording was really bad...
But now that I have reread it, I now realize you're basically saying to African-Americans 'Who cares if you've persecuted against throughout your history? Your wanting to be strong makes me mad, God dammit!'. And then you try to muffle the racism and insensitiveness by saying OTHER minority women should enjoy the spotlight.
ONE MORE THING. Wouldn't your problem with the script writers and producers (Who, face it, are mostly white men) then with the Black actresses portraying them? Why are you blaming the whole RACE for that?
If you reply, I'm sure you're going to mention your Black friends.
Re: 27
My people have been just as persecuted, dude, and I'll venture to say that most cultures/races/etc. have been at some point in history. It doesn't mean that anyone's suffering is worth more or less than anyone elses', but that no one has a monopoly on it. It takes a bigger person to accept the past and move on than to harp on it like it just happened yesterday. =/ (I think that's the point the author was trying to make.)
Re: 27
Black people have a monopoly on suffering? Sounds like the stock market.
The person has a good core message 'No more stereotypes' but they make it sound like 'These stereotypes are too good for these people. They don't deserve them'. Also, in their picture they showed a Black woman (Queen Latifah) known for her loud attitude, as if saying 'She should shut up because she's Black'.
And 'It takes a bigger person to accept the past and move on than to harp on it like it just happened yesterday.'? It DID just happen yesterday. I don't know where you live (must be nice) but racism is still alive and well.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-02 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)I didn't know it was competition. WOW. It's the same mentality as two dumbass women fighting over the same worthless dude who did them both wrong.
YOU SHOULD BE MAD AT THE GUY, not the chick who is in the same boat, dumbass!!

(Anonymous) 2008-02-02 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)THANK YOU. You have no idea how many times I've tried to make my family understand that. The [insert Racial Majority here] is not trying to keep you down; it's your unwillingness to move on that does.
OP of #27
(Anonymous) 2008-02-02 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)I hate the stereotype. I understand that, like Hispanic women, black women often have to be strong because of their culture. But that doesn't mean that's all they are. I hate that stereotype because it portrays black women as if that's all they can be- obnoxiously strong.
There's a difference between being strong and obnoxiously strong. I am a Hispanic woman, but I don't make that my prerogative. I AM HISPANIC WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR!!! That's annoying. It's like inserting 'Is it because I am [insert race/ethnicity here]?' in EVERY FUCKING DISCUSSION AS IF THAT WILL QUALM ALL ARGUMENTS/IS DIVINE TRUTH. No, it's not because you are [insert race/ethnicity here] that I dislike you/did this to you/did not hire you/blah blah blah, it's because you are ignorant/this situation did not involve you/you are not qualified and you make that your prerogative.
Get over yourself. You are more than a minority. You are human. Make people see you like a person and not a stereotype.
I do have a problem with the script writers and producers, but I also have a problem with actresses/actors who portray these roles because NOBODY IS FORCING THEM TO TAKE THEM. Sure, some of this actors might be unknown and this role might be the one to break them, but in the case of Queen Latifah she is so well-known that there is no need for her to do so. She can take on another role that portrays her characters (black women) in a more positive, life-like way.
I do not like Chris Tucker's characters. Why? BECAUSE HE IS ALWAYS PORTRAYING THE SAME STEREOTYPE- loud, obnoxious black man.
And to answer your request, I have no black friends. Why, despite that I go to a 50% black High School? Because, sadly, most of these blacks come from the inner city, and could care less about an education. I'm not wasting my time on people who choose to exploit a stereotype for their benefit.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-04 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)Those strong black women roles? Are roles that some white man is normally giving out. Black women, and minority women in general, have a tougher time getting roles that are non-stereotypical, unless the film is penned by someone who is not white.
It's the same reason why the Latina is always hot-tempered, the same reason why the asian woman is the "sweet tempered geisha girl" or the dragon lady that steals the souls of white men.
So, is it our fault that we aren't taking better roles? How about when BETTER ROLES open themselves up to us?
