Re: If you could own any unusual pet, what would it be?

I've wanted to get a rat for years but my mom is terrified of vermin-folk (and tho I am an adult now, I still live at home, so... sigh).

But any tips for the future-me-whom-possibly-maybe-owns-a-rat?

Yeah! Can't recommend rats as pets enough!

Don't just get one. They are so social group animals, and that's what makes them so smart - both in intelligence and emotionally (which you will definitely see as a rat owner, they are ridiculously intuitive). It's much better to get two same-gendered rats to be buddies and give each other love when you're not around. I also recommend big cages with lots of toys, tunnels, hammocks and little dens to hide away in. You should let them out to run around and play, too, but in a supervised, rat-proof area. Not only because they are little guys and will chew on absolutely anything, toxic or otherwise, but they also love to steal things and hide in couches where it's tough to coax them out!

Hope you can get some in the future one day. :D They are by far the best rodent pet, in my opinion, because they are so socially intelligent and actually want to interact and play with you.

Eee! They sound even more fun now I've learned more about them! Yeah, I'm definitely going to get [2!] the first chance I get! Thank you!

No problem! :D I've never met a rat owner who didn't fall ridiculously in love with them (except one shitty guy who just kept a solo rat in a tiny cage and never let her out and when she tried to escape and hide behind the fridge, complained that she was feral and had "wild instincts"... yeah, pretty sure the problem wasn't the poor rat)
