Well, if it's fanfic it's basically canon fanfic. And as I said, I really enjoyed this season, so...I have no complaints about the direction.

The show is hardly canon at this point though. For one thing, Sansa, Myrcella, Asha, Stannis, Brienne, Loras, and the Sand Snakes story lines are completely rewritten around and important characters like Aegon+the Greyjoy uncles don't even exist. Even GRRM telling D&D to kill Shireen isn't exactly accurate either because GRRM never explicitly stated that Stannis is the one who kills her. You really ought to do yourself a favor and read the books because the show is extremely watered down and misses the mark on practically every single character. Book readers don't necessarily complain or insist people read the books to be obnoxious, some do it because they feel the show isn't doing it any justice and show watchers are missing out on something better.

SA

Some also want show watchers to read the books because it will lessen the disconnect between show watchers and book readers in the fandom. Fandom-wise, it can be incredibly frustrating seeing people demonize characters who are portrayed worse in the show than they are in the books (Stannis) or elevate characters who are portrayed as perfect angels in the show when they're far more flawed in the books (Tyrion).

GRRM is part of the writing team every season, bar the last one.

QQ more.

You didn't even read my second comment, did you?

And you obviously missed the many times he complain about the show changing things that will be important in a future, like the Tyrell brothers.

Being part of the writing team =/= being in charge of the writing.

it's canon FOR THE SHOW.

for fuck's sake.

do you realize how elitist this comment sounds? this is why people like OP are complaining.

Did you even read my comment? It wasn't even elitist, I'm practically pleading that show watchers read the books because I can't stand the disconnect in the fandom. Jeez.

It was assuming by default that the books were correct and the shows were incorrect in any ways in which they deviated from the books. "You really ought to do yourself a favor" isn't pleading, it's condescending, and furthermore show watchers don't owe it to anybody to read the books just because some book readers don't like the mixed fandom.

Also, anon just said "canon", they didn't mention it being specific to the show.
