Not neanderthals, but there has been a couple of articles about cloning some of our earlier ancestors (nothing above a few cells worth, though) to try and get a handle on that jump from large brained monkey to upright proto-human. It is all very speculative and theoretical, but you know the media. From "if we had the ability, it might be nice to try and create some cells from an early ancestors" they got "bringing back cavemen!!!!".
