You know...

I'm an Arab woman and I'm just happy to see ANY Arab people in movies AT ALL.

Can you think of that many big name Arab actors or actresses? Omar Sharif is probably the most famous but I can't think of a single modern actor as famous as he. Let alone ANY Arab women.

And even though this film has some racist elements (the depiction of how Damascus is captured and handled DOES make me cringe), it's STILL better than 99% of films today where Arabs are basically terrorists or minor, unimportant characters.

At least here, there's positive elements to their presentation and they're among the most three-dimensional Arab characters ever depicted in a major Hollywood film.

Hidalgo is a movie that has women in arabic world.

Yeah, I remember seeing that.

It also features Omar Sharif. But the actress isn't Arab. She's British and Burmese-Indian-Malay.

So I guess it's half a success -- the character is Arab even if the actress isn't.

I was gonna suggest Naveen Andrews, but he's apparently British born with parents from India, and he was raised Methodist.

I do love his performance as Sabal in Far Cry 4 but...I don't really count him as Arab. Though, to be fair, I don't think that many people of Indian heritage would consider themselves Arab.

I wouldn't guess so.

I really can't think of anybody and that kind of bothers me.

Well, he does have that Methodist vibe.

Would you count people of mixed ethnicity? In that case: Salma Hayek is probably the most famous currently, or Shakira (both of Lebanese descent). Jerry Seinfeld has a Syrian parent.

If you're looking for Western celebs born in Arabic-speaking countries, that's going to be a tough call because there have always been limited roles for "exotic" actors with foreign accents, partly because Hollywood fails to distinguish beyond "vaguely ethnic looking." Thus you can have Ben Kingsley playing everyone from Gandhi to Moses to Lenin.

Alexander Siddig/ Siddig El Fadil (best known for playing Julian Bashir in Deep Space 9) is mixed race with a Sudanese father - in fact, I've just discovered he's descended from the Madhi who fought against the British in the Sudan Campaign.
