Psychics/the supernatural/"readings" thread

(Anonymous) 2015-07-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Do you think you're the sort of person inclined to believe in things like psychics, astrology, the supernatural, ghosts, etc? Would you ever visit someone like a tarot reader or someone who claims to communicate with the dead? Do you check your horoscope?

Myself, I'm 100% skeptic and think it's all bogus, but my imagination is ridiculously fantasy oriented so I think I still have that part of me that's really fascinated by the concept. I don't believe it, but a part of me wants to. I've always wanted to have my tarot cards read just for the fun of it.

It's completely bogus, but it's fun. I wasted a few dollars once getting my fortune told with tarots. She told me to dump my then-boyfriend, which actually turned out to be pretty good advice.

I'm completely skeptical. I think the whole thing is ridiculous. I have a bunch of people on my tumblr dashboard who love posting astrology sign things, and I wish they'd tag them all with the same things so I could block those tags.

I think getting tarot read can be a sort of meditative exercise or just encourage you to think about problems in certain ways, and in that sense, it's harmless enough. I think that sort of thing, or even reading horoscopes forthat matter, can be "secular" as long as you don't hold them as anything besides a fun mental exercise.

Eh, it's stupid fun. I don't believe in any of it, but I used to get tarot readings from friends who were into it all the time.

What's interesting is how many of the same cards kept repeatedly showing up.

I love this shit -- reading my horoscope religiously, getting my tarot cards read one in a blue moon, totally looking out for ghosts and paranormal activity -- but I'll admit I don't fully believe it. I personally have zero proof any of this is real; I just like to wonder "what if..."

(Honestly, I read my horoscope now because it motivates me to do stuff. "Oh, my horoscope says my work ethic will be better today than yesterday? I guess I can try harder today!")

I don't believe in it, but it can be entertaining. I don't go out of my way to keep up with it, but if an astrology post comes across my dash I'll look at it. (And usually laugh, because my sign would only be accurate in mirror!verse.)

I hold a bit of a grudge, because that's where the family money went. First the psychics would tell my grandmother that she was going to get a lot of money soon, then the contest promoters would send her letters telling her that she could win a lot of money if she entered their contests (with tiny little gray text informing her that she couldn't actually win anything.) My grandparents were pretty rich once, but with psychic after psychic sending my grandmother letters, calling her on the phone, and even showing up at her door, she had almost nothing left when she died.

Oh jeez, that is really a horror story. :( To me, that's why psychics and the lot are not "harmless". If there's no blatant disclaimer that it's just fun and for entertainment, you have them taking advantage of people, often vulnerable people like the elderly, the depressed, etc and stealing all of their money on a false service. I wish you could sue that psychic.

Speaking as someone who has actually had experiences with ghosts and shit that cannot be logically proven, yes, I believe in ghosts. And astrology is much more interesting when you take into account both western astrology and Chinese astrology. Together they help paint a bigger and better (and just more accurate) view of oneself. Newspaper astrology is hokey and bullshit though.

Yeah, I'm definitely in the same boat. I don't believe in any of that (ghosts aren't real) but most of it fascinates me to one extent or another. In particular a lot of the really old, pre-modern esotericism and astrology and stuff is really, really amazing - I think what blows my mind about it is that it's this whole alternate philosophical worldview that was fairly widespread and now is just... invisible. And it's also something that leads to a bunch of really fascinating systems of thought and systems of the universe.

Also I really like ghost stories, but that's just because I really like ghost stories, there's nothing deeper to that. And I might go to a tarot reading for the novelty of it and because I do kind of like the aesthetic, but purely as entertainment.

I'm an atheist and a skeptic and adamant about it, but I do acknowledge that science is constantly evolving and there are scientific explanations for everything, we just don't know what they are yet.

Fun to think about but do not believe.

I believe supernatural things exist, but my POV on it is very coloured by my christian upbringing. I don't believe in horoscopes though, and do believe it's one of any number of useless things one can get obsessed with and go wandering down a really weird path in life because of.

Meanwhile, I have fond memories of the time the local free paper in my hometown had a habit of putting silly horoscopes and TV show summaries. I fondly recall one where it said "keep an open mind, but not so open your brain falls out.".
