For me it depends entirely on the fandom. I could read a Merlin AU with no magic, but I would find it confusing and most likely wouldn't enjoy it as much.

That said, reading about X-Men without powers would not be worth it for me. Same for Star Trek AU's that aren't set in space or don't include aliens.

I WISH more fic like you described existed. (Modern AU's with powers.) Maybe I just have a difficult time finding it, but it seems sort of rare.

I'm sorry! :( It might depend on the pairing? I tend to read the big pairings (Merlin/Arthur, Erik/Charles, etc). There's quite a lot of modern fic with magic for Merlin/Arthur, but if you're not into that pairing, maybe it's not so common? I don't know.

I ship those pairings too! I do remember fic of that sort in XMFC fandom (that one had the most, I think), but not so much in Merlin.

However, I didn't stick around in Merlin fandom for long and though I always meant to go back and read more fic, I haven't. The few Merlin/Arthur fics I read after the series ended tended to be modern stories set post canon, but magic was either never mentioned or didn't play a big part. (Which I found disappointing.)

That's interesting. Hmm. I guess I never paid much to how much non-magical fic there was. If I saw No magic or Non-magical Merlin or something like that in the tags I just skipped over it. Sorry you haven't found what you're looking for though!

That's okay! It's probably my own fault for not paying more attention to the tags. People tag so much shit these days that I usually just skip them altogether and give it a read if it sounds interesting and is a pairing I like.

That has backfired on me before, lol.
