The Roosevelt administration let the mob have chunks of the government in Sicily in exchange for counter-espionage in the shipping industry during the Battle of the Atlantic.

It would surprise me if this was actually true (except with a strong element of anti-Communism thrown in there in addition to whatever Battle of the Atlantic stuff)
