But they're...supposed to be different? Konzen and Kenren and Tenpou aren't coming back. The fact that they reincarnated as Sanzo and Gojyo and Hakkai doesn't mean they're supposed to be the same people; it means their souls are keeping that promise they made, even though they won't remember and they're not even the people who made the promise.

That being said, I loved the little family the Heaven group had, and I cry over Gaiden all the time, but I do agree that I prefer them now, as the assholes they became.
