Age in fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
How much does it matter to you? Will you not interact with someone because of their age?

Re: Age in fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll pleasantly interact with anyone, but I'm 26 and have no desire to get close to anyone twenty or under. It's just weird. Though I was at my most active in fandom when I was a teenager and I would befriend older people all the time, but idk, now that I'm on this end, it's different. Well in a fandom it doesn't matter, but it would be awkward to read their pornfic.

Age generally doesn't matter to me. But as I'm getting older, I do feel a little weird to interact with younger fans, especially in contexts that are more mature in nature.

Re: Age in fandom

In terms of anything erotic, they MUST be over 18.

I try to limit myself to over 18 in general just to avoid any possible legal complications. Besides that I am open to hanging out with anyone.

I actually prefer talking to older people because I find their thoughts are generally more interesting (due to more experience) and better organized. Though younger people have blown me away with their insights too.

I'm 24. I don't know if that's considered young or old but I don't much care, like I said, as long as someone's over 18.

I don't mind talking with people under 18 about our shared fandoms, but I'm less likely to friend/follow them. Personal posts from that age group tends to be about stuff I haven't dealt with in years, and it just feels weird to me.

Disclaimer: I'm 33.

I don't really care about ages... I don't go out of my way to say "if you're underage, we can't be friends". When I (accidentally) find out someone is 17, it's... weird. But generally they tend to be better behaved than the older (45+) people in my fandoms, many of whom seem to think their age means they've earned some kind of rank in the fandom hierarchy. As far as my friends/repeated contacts go. Typically I don't associate with people who act childishly, regardless of their age. I'd prefer that minors not read my porn, but I'm not their parent so it's not my job to police their internet experience (and I was doing the same thing at their age).

+1

Not so much. Honestly the only point I'd care if it's a minor interacting with me over something X-rated. Like, if you want to venture into porn...I get it, but I'd like to have no part in it.

I have to admit that I get a bit weirded out if I find out someone is under 18.

I think it depends what kind of interaction. General friendliness I'm fine with.
When it comes to getting closer, I'd probably find it difficult to really relate to anybody younger than 20, as we're at pretty different stages in life. Not so much a conscious "we shall not be friends", but I tend to gravitate towards older people.
But I have a few fandom friends who are early 20s, and that's fine.

I generally try to avoid long-term, more one-on-one interaction with anyone under twenty-ish, if only because it feels kind of creepy and awkward on my end. I feel like less of a creeper if I have that more personal fannish interaction with people around my age. And I just can't relate with kids these days, because my patience and temper are both super-short, haha.

I'm wary of interacting with minors in fandom. Like, I know they're there and I make sure anything they shouldn't be seeing is clearly labeled, but I'm a 24 year old man, I have no interest in being their friend.

Not specifically but I would be wary of someone who's a teen. Once I got to know them it might not matter as much.

Re: Age in fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as they aren't mentally fourteen. I've met actual fourteen year olds who have their head screwed on right, and I've met 40 year old fans who throw tantrums and scream that it isn't fair...etc. I'm too tired to deal with the angsty-tantrumy teen these days, no matter how old they really are.

The older I get, the more I try to distance myself from fans who are under 18. Not because they're awful or immature necessarily, but because it just feels really weird from my end. Part of it is reliving how painful and awkward those years were, and part of it is wrestling with wanting to give advice and rescue every sad young person in fandom, which would be disastrous if I attempted it.

Don't really care but I try to steer clear of young teens (under 18). ...I just don't feel that comfortable since I tend to be a serial flirt/discuss sexual things pretty openly. I don't want to accidentally into To Catch A Predator.

Nah I don't care, I'll be cautious about discussing anything smutty with someone who I know is a teen or something, it otherwise it's not something that bothers me.

Re: Age in fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I am a little uncomfortable with underage people. I won't NOT talk to them, but I will be much more cautious about what I talk about and how I talk to them.

I'm 26 and I don't care about the age as long as I don't have to read about Uni exams and school problems. I think I'm a bit wary of people who're still studying.

Re: Age in fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I tend to negatively compare myself against people who I view as "better" than me in some way, and I feel less bad about it when they're older than me. Other than that, I don't really care, as long as they can spell. Most of my friends right now are a few years younger.

I'm less likely to interact with someone who I know is under 18 just because it makes me a bit uncomfortable because of the way I naturally do fandom (which tends to be rather NSFW in nature). I really don't want to know that they've been reading my pics.

Mostly I don't notice. As long as the person doesn't act immature then I don't mind that much.

Now, I did have a moment of confusion recently when I realized one of the people I follow is a teen, but as long as they don't post something inappropriate I doubt I'll unfollow.

Re: Age in fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm not against interacting with someone in fandom based on their age, but I tend to limit my interaction if they're a lot younger. I just kind of feel like it's inappropriate to spend that much time with someone who's basically a kid and not my descendant or adopted by me.

Of course, sometimes it backfires, since it gets difficult to find folks my age into MY fandoms.

As a rule, unless someone tells me, I have no idea how old anyone is, and don't care. I'm not the internet police, and if some 14 year old wants to read my explicit fic and tell me s/he loved it, well - more power to 'em.

Well, I got reamed a new one yesterday saying that I prefer to follow and be followed by people my own age. Like 17 to 30 works for me. Any younger and I feel like a mom, and any older and I feel like I'm being followed by a mom.

It doesn't really matter to me, as long as you're a fan.

Of course there's stuff that I'm not going to do with underage people, like RPing porny stuff or stuff like that, but talking and stuff is fine for me.
