I genuinely think child stardom is poison. Especially Disney stardom. So many of them end up fucked through their teen years and early adulthood and they get so much backlash for it it only makes it worse. Shia was just another victim.

I'm inclined to agree with this. I know he wasn't Disney (well, he voiced Monzenrath in the 'Aladdin' cartoon, so maybe he counts by proxy), but look at the tragic story of Jonathan Brandis. IMHO, he's probably one of the more well-known cases of how destructive child stardom can be. As for long-time Disney child stars, I think the only one that turned out relatively normal -in comparison to everyone else- was Hillary Duff.

(And that's not even getting into the Nickelodeon child stars, either)

Wow, MTE

I've always believed this. It really did effect how I judged child stars even when they got a little crazy. I always feel a little sympathetic to their situation even if I don't agree with what they're doing (not that I wouldn't hold them responsible for acting up and hurting someone through it). I just think child stardom is a reason for why they act a certain way.

Example- Miley Cyrus. Even in her Hannah Montana days she was under a constant spotlight with people jumping on her when she acted indecently. often making a big deal when she acted like, well a teenager. Everyone expected her to be their child's role model, so she couldn't make mistakes, and had to look like this "pure girl". Do I think that her over the top attempts to be sexy and edgy are ridiculous? yeah kinda.

Am I surprised? Hardly.

Contractal Purity combined with being in the spotlight is not good for kids and teens because it doesn't let them make mistakes.

Yep. I'm no fan of Miley Cyrus (didn't care for her when she was 'Hannah Montana', don't care for her now), but knowing the whole toxic world of child stardom and the intense scrutiny they're under, it's easy to see how once she was free of Disney, she went in the complete opposite direction.

And it makes me wonder what will happen to a lot of the Nickelodeon child stars (particularly if the rumors about Dan Schneider are indeed true), especially after what's happened to Amanda Bynes and Drake Bell... though given people like Kenan Thompson, Ariana Grande, and Josh Peck are doing pretty well for themselves, maybe working for Nick isn't as awful as it is for Disney.

Fair enough. I liked her original songs, because I felt like she was really good at emotional songs. Now that I'm older and its been several years after its oversaturation, I find the Hannah Montana stuff really bubbly and positive.

I think child stardom is risky in general but the company makes something of a difference. A lot of Nick stars seem to do well, but a lot of Disney girls seem to have a trend of having issues at one point or another.

Well I mean...with Amanda Bynes I think it might not have been Nick's fault. She has a serious mental illness that most likely would've exploded in her mid- to late-20s anyway.

True.

But at the same time, being a celebrity couldn't have helped.

Actually, yes, he was Disney. Even Stevens for three(ish?) years was a Disney show. I just remember thinking they'd cloned Screech, and if you had to clone someone from SBtB, it should not have been him.

they said Jonathan Brandis wasn't Disney

You're right. My apologies. I shouldn't read on two hours sleep.

The Jonas Brothers and the Sprouse twins came out fairly okay. (I think I read an article about the middle Jonas brother about how hard it was to be a 20-year-old who couldn't rebel due to the Disney machine, but it seems he didn't end up screwing up too badly...)

+1

I just feel sorry for the Disney and Nickolodeon kids because being a star that young has really fucked with them horribly.

What's interesting (in a depressing, morbid sort of way) is that this isn't a recent phenomenon. Shit like this has been happening to child stars for decades. Bobby Driscol (aka Peter Pan, and the kid from Treasure Island and Song of the South)ended up dying penniless in a pauper's grave due to a drug addiction. Judy Garland's issues have been well documented. The whole thing is just so messed up.

And then there's the entire Different Strokes cast...
