I understand most of the appeal is probably the nostalgic value, but if you ever want at least a taste of the pokemon world it's never too late.

The good (bad?) thing about pokemon is that all the games are pretty similar except for updated graphics and more pokemon, so you can jump on at any time and get a similar experience. Or you could buy blue/red for the classic experience.
