Yessss that's stupid. I'm okay with magic being unknown - I think it's really interesting if magic is just, like, this weird, boring, old forgotten thing in the corner that no one really cares or knows about or believes in because it's weird and dusty and boring and all the people who do it are weirdos - but actively keeping it a secret is played out.

Also, and relatedly, the whole thing where someone finds out about magic or a secret world and WAAAAAAOW THEY'RE FREAKING OUT AND TOTALLY SHOCKED AND WHAT IS GOING ON. Like, it just honestly doesn't ring true to me in most cases.
