What's your favorite "alternate path" idea?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-29 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Explanation: Sometimes people will make alternate path ideas or fanfics- not exactly AUs, but a divergence from the canon.

My favorite was one I saw where Cedric doesn't die and Harry ends up becoming friends with/teamed with Cedric, Fleur, and Krum. I liked it because it was very creative, and I think I would have like the dynamic if it had happened.

I really love Harry Potter Aus where something slight is changed that then changes the whole story. Like Harry raised by someone other than the Dursleys or Harry in a different house.

I love those too.

I'd like to see one that doesn't cross into the "bash dumbledore/bash everyone allied with him" sorta thing. DO you have any recs for a "raised by someone else fic" that doesn't do that thing?

Honestly, beyond the Dangerverse which was amazing until the end kind of ruined it, I don't have any at the moment. I've kind of switched fandoms and haven't read Potter fics in months because I've finally found another fandom that I'm that obsessive about.

I really hate the bash everyone stuff too. Like, in-character disagreeing with a character's actions is fine. Dumbledore did plenty of debatable things. But most of the time there is just no nuance. Everyone is suddenly evil. I don't even like Molly Weasley and I still hate all the fics that randomly make her evil.

The Treaty http://archiveofourown.org/works/1144961/chapters/2317977 (Jaime/Brienne) The Lannisters accept Robb Stark's peace terms, dooming Jaime Lannister to life as a hostage at Winterfell.

These are more extreme diverges.

Full of Grace http://archiveofourown.org/works/869319 (Bucky/Steve) In an alternate universe, Steve Rogers falls from the train and becomes the Winter Soldier. Bucky Barnes crashes the Hydra plane into the Arctic, and is awoken seventy years later to be made Captain America.

The Hardest Battles Are The Ones Most Worth Fighting http://archiveofourown.org/works/2697560/chapters/6037154 It was such a small thing really, what Loki had done. But even small things can reveal so much. For Odin, it might mean he doesn't know his son as well as he thought.

In fact, he might not know him at all.

Ghost Stories http://archiveofourown.org/works/2664137 (Steve/Bucky) For the prompt: The AU where Steve Rogers sees the best in everyone, and it is that quality that brings him back the person he loves most in the world; where Steve reaches out to help the Winter Soldier on principle, but when the muzzle-mask comes off, he finds Bucky Barnes.

I was way into Severitus way back after book 5 came out. Then book 7 came out and we found out how the Snape and Lily friendship ended and I couldn't read Severitus anymore.

Unfortunately, this was just an idea, not a fanfic. :( I wanted to see a fanfic, though.

I read one HP fic that made Percy a secret auror. Mostly I just remember how it explained the returning of the Christmas sweater as actual being the last step in a spell to make Molly the only person who could open his door if something happened to him.

I can't pinpoint why but that just breaks my heart.
