A lot of herbs have active ingredients like that. I mean, aspirin originally came from a plant. Many are not prescribed by doctors but are by naturopaths, and are actually evidence based.
Some are (widely) anecdotally based as yet, because they haven't been studied enough yet. Others have and found to be ineffective.
Just because it's a pill or other extraction not prescribed by a doctor doesn't mean it's "alternative" bunkum. "Women's problems" are something that have had a lot of success with herbs. But it's best to educate yourself about the active ingredients.
