Fanfic isn't very good at that NOW. However go back a bit and it was very good at it. We need to work out why current writers are not capable of doing that, and once we've realized the answer is AO3 and Tumblr do something about it. AO3 was the worst thing to happen to fanfiction, its echo chamber persuaded a lot of smut writers and huggyfic writers that they were actually good at writing and gave them a safe base to attack everyone else from. In a less protected forum, where you either gave feedback or nothing at all (fucking useless kudos system), they'd be forced to raise their game considerably. Even ff.net is producing better writers than AO3 right now.

With respect, you sound like a total crank, which makes it hard to take you seriously,

See, if you'd just stuck with griping about it I would have sympathized with you. But this whole "we need to do something about it" bit is unbelievably self-entitled. Fic writers write for FREE, because they WANT TO, and because they have ideas about the characters that they want to see realized. It's a HOBBY. It doesn't cater to any one person's tastes specifically (unless it's a gift fic), and it shouldn't be expected to. You may as well be saying, "The person at work who keeps baking cookies and leaving them in the break room has to be STOPPED. We need to let them know that I don't like cookies and they need to start baking brownies instead."
