in fanfic, the romance is the plot, which is great if like you, you're reading it for the romance but kind of crappy if you want plot in addition to the romance. IME, fanfic isn't very good at that.

Sigh. This is one of the things I miss most about The X-Files fandom. A lot of XF fanfic managed to do plot AND shipping, together in one fic, far better and more often than it's done in any other fandoms I've been in.
