jaw pain

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
since sunday i've woke up with intense pain in my jaw on the right side. i think it's the jaw hinge but it's hard to pinpoint where the pain is coming from. by the end of each day the pain is mostly subsided (i think chewing motions are the reason) but i'll wake up the next morning with a painful/stiff jaw again. i have two impacted wisdom teeth so i'm thinking maybe that's the cause, but the pain just came on pretty suddenly. i'm going to the dentist soon but am too busy this week for an appointment. anyone have any idea what this could be?

Are you grinding your teeth while you sleep? I had the same sort of jaw pain a while ago, and I was terrified that I had mutilple root canals going on... Fortunately my dentist ruled that out pretty quickly and recommended that I get a mouthguard. It is worth every penny.

Anyway, whatever the cause, I hope you feel better ASAP. Tooth pain is the worst! :(

oh yeah i forgot to mention that i do clench my teeth sometimes when i'm sleeping. i don't think this is the same thing though because it's just one side and i've never previously woken up with severe pain after a night of clenching my teeth. i do need a mouth guard though haha

This, maybe? I grind my teeth myself, and it took quite a long time for me to "find out" - basically enough people who happened to sleep near me mention that I do. Now I wear a mouthguard at night. It sucks, but saves me (some) jaw pain, and from my teeth wearing down!

Sinus infection, I'd put money on it. It is causing you to clench your jaw in your sleep and the muscle is overstressed and causing referred pain in your facial nerves. Take some ibuprofen or any other NSAID before you go to sleep and while you are awake apply a mild heatpack to the side of your face and drink warm milk almost constantly.

Bruxism? TMJ?

If its when you wake up specifically I would put my money on bruxism, like grinding or clenching your jaw in your sleep. I clench at night and often wake up with stiffness and pain. Bring it up with your dentist though, definitely.

yeah you're definitely grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw in your sleep, probably as a result of the wisdom tooth pain?

It could be a bad tooth. If it's not grinding or sinus, the check with your dentist.
