Artemis Fowl gets a bit repetitive in the later books but is loads of fun, really creative. Redwall gets REALLY repetitive but I'd at least read the first few (Mossflower is chronologically first just fyi). IF you can get your hands on it, Zahn's Dragonback series is a great middle-grade scifi option. Garth Nix's Seventh Tower series has some great ideas. For old-fashioned standalone children's books, The Wind Boy and The Little White Horse are two beautiful, evocative reads. If you've never read the original Winnie the Pooh, just seen the Disney versions, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised by it. :D

The Fire-Us series is a surprisingly good post-apocalyptic YA series.
