nayrt - I agree, but the problem with legumes is that to take advantage of cheap dried beans/lentils/chickpeas, etc. you really have to know how to cook AND have the facilities and time to do so. A badly seasoned, undercooked bean dish is a recipe for sadness and indigestion.

Yep as the person who lived on them you need to have the time and facilities to prepare and cook them. Perhaps the woman in question was living somewhere where she couldn't cook veggo anymore? But it seems strange if it's just a question of food cost.

Also, when I started eating beans, I got a lot of indigestion at first, but I got used to it.
