Eh. "Loki was mind controlled" doesn't have to be complete woobiefication, though. There are plenty of theories that imply he is still to blame for most of what he did/that he wasn't exactly mind controlled but they certainly had some leverage over him (which is, in fact, canon).
One of the reasons this theory exists is because his plan seems so damn stupid that "it was stealthily set up by him to fail" makes more sense than "he just is that stupid".
