Well... or at least lots of research into the topic. Would get a bit bloody if every crime and thriller author needed to have first hand experience when writing from the POV of a serial killer.

But seriously: It's not wrong. At least with easily done thing, I'd always suggest authors to try and get a bit of first hand experience. You have a very different understanding of, say, letting your characters sleep outside all the time on their epic quest if you actually try to do this as well, even if it's just one night.
