I know one fic (50 chapters or so) where the author changed the pairing in the last chapter, replacing the main pairing with the competing OTP of the fandom. Trolling or not, that's a bit late in the game to change pairings without warning.

I get that might not be what the readers want to see, but I think in the end you write for you, and you write what feels right for the story. In any non-fic story, a pairing change could happen last minute. I know people read fic to get specific elements, usually pairing, but honestly an author doesn't really owe readers anything. It if feels right for the story, then that's that. Yeah, you might make some readers mad, but oh well, there's worse things in life than having a fic take a turn you didn't want it to.

NA Yep, I think so. "I can do what I like!" yeah sure but give people a heads up.
