De-lurking in fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-07-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
So I've been a fandom lurker for something like 20 years. In all that time, I've never posted un-anon, and I only started commenting anonymously on stuff three or so years ago. Before that, I think I posted a couple fics on a kinkmeme. I'm considering making a tumblr, because that's where most of my fandoms are, but I'd prefer to keep it totally separate from my offline life. Pretty much everyone I know knows I'm a huge nerd, but I don't want coworkers or family finding my pornfic or whatever, and part of one of my bigger fandoms is currently going through some nasty account hacking drama that I'd prefer to stay the hell away from.

I went to set up a yahoo mail account to use for fandom-only stuff, only to realize too late that to activate the account, I had to use my real phone number, so I ended up making an account I can't use or get into. I already have gmail and (don't laugh) aol accounts attached to my real name, so they're out. If I want to create a fandom-only identity, what's a good, free email service to use, that would be easy to link to tumblr and doesn't require tying to my RL phone number or existing email accounts?

Also, I have no intention of causing drama. It took me 20 fucking years to seriously consider de-anoning, and in the 3 or so years I've been commenting anonymously, I've never trolled, sent hate, or deliberately fed trolls. Even sending nice comments makes me a nervous wreck; I'd be terrified to be an asshole.

You can have multiple gmail accounts without linking them to any others.

This. Don't overthink it, OP. I keep real and fandom life separate too and haven't had a problem. Make a new gmail address and go from there.

I'm pretty sure outlook doesn't require any real confirmation anymore? Don't entirely recall though

Outlook requires either a phone number or an alternate email, but I think that's more "just in case you lose your password" than actually linking accounts in a way other people can see

Yeah IIRC they don't really ask you to confirm or anything. So you could just make an Outlook account and use a fake e-mail as the back-up, and then use that Outlook account as the back-up for the next fake e-mail.

On yahoo, there's blue text that says "skip" when it asks for a cell phone number. I've had the same yahoo account for ages, and it still asks me for it.

I suspect that that's something that yahoo does to accounts that predate the phone number requirement. When I made a dummy account, it required a cell number, and wouldn't load if I left that field blank, so I used an online number generator to make one up. In order to use the account, I would've had to first enter a code yahoo sent as a text to that made up number. Which sucks.

I don't want to cause mischief or break the law or be an asshole or hurt anyone. I just want an anonymous email to use for an anonymous tumblr. For fuck's sake, I don't have a Facebook, or twitter. I've never had any kind of social media account. I don't have any secrets worth hiding, just too much anxiety to be comfortable linking fandom and my tiny boring life.
