Same here. In my language everything is pronounced just as it is written, so there's no room for variation.

it really weirds me out to imagine pronouncing it as either of OPs variations. like I would literally cringe trying to say it that way. it's like listening to people trying to speak mandarin in Firefly, that kind of wrong.

The thing is, in English, "it's pronounced how it's written" means nothing. People don't just make up random pronunciations. There's just no standard, unless you're familiar with the etymology of a word (and even then, "correct" pronunciation in your language might have changed just because of standard, common usage). When people pronounce "karaoke" differently, it's because there are just so many possible ways to pronounce English vowels.

Exactly. Do I cringe when I hear either of the OPs examples? Yes. But that's because I know how it's "supposed" to be pronounced, but I can't blame people who aren't into Japanese culture to know that unlike English, Japanese is very "said like it's spelled".

Latest culprit? I kept having to mute the recent commercial for Manga Rock mascara.

(To be fair, I also cringe at things like "fah - gee - ta" for "fajita".)
