"how much you think people in general would consider them attractive" wouldn't matter, since the question was directly about subjective attractiveness-to-you.

But my point is, I don't think that's a useful definition of superficialness

Why not? "existing or occurring at or on the surface." "situated or occurring on the skin or immediately beneath it." If it's regarding physical appearance, it is literally superficial.

If you have a thing for something that society doesn't approve of, tattoos for example, and you refuse to date someone who doesn't have one, that is still, literally, superficial and has nothing to do with whether other people approve or not
