Re: Do you love your job? Why?

That sounds like an awesome job. I'm assuming you're in the public sector, like a government job? I work for a city, and I was hoping my role would be all of the things you describe, but not so much. Maybe I could transition to other government work.

DA

You hadn't said this upthread. You're in a government job? KEEP IT. These may be the only permanent jobs with pension/benefits left, in the future, everything's going the way of contracts and, even worse, piecework. Medieval times, indeed. (Though the pensions definitely aren't a certainty, the benefits are worth it.)

I wouldn't mind staying in a government job, but my current position is keeping me away from my family and causing me a lot of mental/physical stress. I'm not thrilled about leaving those protections, but security loses to my family and my health every time.

I completely agree about contracts and piecemeal jobs. I already live in a right-to-work state, and I don't foresee things getting better. Not anytime soon anyway.

AYRT

eeeeee, that sucks. Can you apply for internal positions, or would that fast-track you out of the door?

Because we've got a serious manpower shortage (part of the stress), they haven't opened up positions that would allow me to have a better schedule/less stress. We're supposed to have flexibility in that respect, but a position hasn't opened up in years. When they do, it'll be a mad dash, and senior level people will undoubtedly get it before me. I don't know what would happen if I applied for a position within the city but another department. Nothing great, I would think. I might have better luck in another municipality nearby.
