It seems to work for Scandinavia, though I don't know if that ties into the strange conformist regulated attitudes they have about some things.

It sort of depends on what you define democratic socialism as I guess. I'm all for state ownership of public resources, high tax rates, fair welfare, free public health system, and for most of my life I've experienced those in my country. The US, which doesn't for the most part, seems like a dog-eat-dog wilderness by contrast. If you're down on your luck in any way you're mostly f$@%&!d.
