There were a few episodes where I could see Hal as not being that great and there was that flashback where you saw that he could be a jerk, but I always thought of his character as a good intentioned sweet guy who made mistakes sometimes. I also thought his love for Lois was really sweet and that he really loved his family. He was definitely a goof but I don't know if a douche would really describe him, at least from my interpretation.

When hearing about Walter White it just felt like opposite day for me at first.

Yeah, same. Hal alwas felt like to me as someone who tried really hard, but sort of fails at it. He seems like one of those people who shouldn't have had kids, but he did anyway, and he does love them - he just has no idea what to do with them half of the time.
