Fandoms Most Gatekeepy

What's the most gatekeepy/elitist fandom you've encountered? The least?

Were you surprised?

PC gaming for sure. And not particularly.

Honestly, Sailor Moon is an incredibly elitist fandom. I was pretty shocked. I got into magic girl stuff pretty late in my anime-watching career (read as: only in the last couple of years), and man, you'd think I'd personally murdered everyone's puppies for not having grown up with the original anime or read the manga. (That said, I do really like the show! I've watched all of the original anime now, though I haven't seen the old dub, which is apparently an experience. Crystal, unfortunately, bored me too much to keep watching.)

Least elitist that I've personally experienced has been Lord of the Rings. Sure, there's a few people that are stuffed up their own butts with pretension about it, but I'd feel comfortable saying that the majority is pretty cool with you regardless of your level of involvement. I've never particularly felt singled out for being mostly a fan of the movies, and people have always been really excited to teach me more things that I want to know (rather than scoffing that I don't already know it).

Whedon-dom. If you are prepared to uncritically rave about everything he is even tangentially connected with, and prepared to hate-on Doctor Who fandom, then it is fine. Step off the line, even a little, and they will consume you.

Wait, there's a connection between being a Whedon fanatic and hating DW fandom?

This is new to me. Is it to do with Whedon being divisive as a writer and and nu!Who also having divisive (main) writers?

If you don't unequivocally support Whedon in each and every fanpoll then a Doctor Who alternative wins it instead. If you like anything Doctor Who then you get called a sexual deviant who deserves unpleasant things to happen to you because you must support whatever idiotic thing tumblr has cooked up about Moffat this week, instead of dear sainted Joss who is the only true feminist writer without peer and the complete contrast to Moffat (and occasionally Davies too). It is stupid. Basically they are terrified that someone other than Whedon winning polls, and of course desperately papering over Whedon's own narrative shortcomings by inventing some more for Moffat.

Lol that's a new one for me as fans of both.
