I read almost up to this this most recent hiatus and I have no clue what is happening. I didn't get to the part the secret is referencing. I think I'm just going to wait til it's finished and then finish it in one chunk.

Absolutely least confusing synopsis - due to John's getting unstuck in time, he was able to create a stable alternate timeline, where everything from Vriska's death onward happened differently. Importantly, the Beta Kids sprites went unprototyped, for the most part...then one of them got prototyped with Nepeta's corpse, and all went well...until Nepetasprite shook hands with Davesprite, creating the sprite shown in the secret. (Davepetasprite^2.)

And, yes, that is, in fact, the least confusing possible synopsis of what happened.

The original timeline is still in play, in the form of John, Roxy and some ghosts, so I don't know if 'copout' is really the right word.

IMHO, it's supposed to make fun of all the freakishly weird ways that video game characters can power up and/or transform during the course of the game. And all the strange mental gymnastics that fandom goes through to ship them afterwards.
Lighten up a little, people.

This sort of thing is part of why I dropped Homestuck and am considering whether or not to re-read it after the end. Hussie has always had the "important" characters (John, Karkat, fuckin Vriska, etc.) and the "unimportant" ones (Nepeta, Equius, Eridan, etc.). Which is fine, in any story (and especially one as big as Homestuck), not everyone can be a main character or have a full arc or whatever.
But Hussie seems to like mocking people whose favorites are in the "unimportant" group, basically being like "look at your bad taste liking these side characters, I will only ever use them for comic relief". Hell, look at the most recent flash and preceding pages--Terezi and Vriska's reunion was emotional and poignant, with memories of their friendship. Equius-sprite and Nepeta-sprite's was a grotesque drawing with paragraphs talking sarcastically about how it's the best reunion in Homestuck and to send selfies of yourself reading this AMAZING PAGE. Even though their ghosts get a reunion in the later flash, Hussie's whole attitude is just a pain in the ass.

But Hussie also made fun of his need to make Vriska his personal canon Sue in an earlier arc. So he even mocks himself for liking the " important " characters.
Nobody is immune.

But Vriska in addition to that has actual character development and plot importance. For the joke-tier characters, they don't have that backup. Vriska may have the waifu scenes and BLUH BLUHs but also real, serious story moments. Equius is always the "haha weird sweaty guy" even in his death scene.
