Underappreciated Female Characters

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Can be great characters that don’t get the recognition they deserve or obscure characters no one talks about or just any female characters you want to give a signal-boost

Veronica Mars. The show has cult fame but never reached a wide audience. Veronica probably rates in my favorite characters of all time.

Amen to this. Veronica is a BRILLIANT character, and had a great supporting cast, including Best TV Dad Ever.

(Still an antishipper with Logan, though. Fuck that guy.)

Third Age Tolkien Ladies

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Third Age
Fíriel - Gondorian princess who ends up as Queen of Arnor. Her brothers and father are killed and her husband sent a note to Gondor that she should've been the Ruling Queen (per Numenorean law). This note and her right to rule are basically why Aragorn had the right to become King of Gondor later on. But let's take a moment to consider how badass a Ruling Queen of Gondor would've been.

Vidumavi - a Northman "barbarian" princess who married the heir to Gondor and became queen of Gondor. She basically wowed all the snobs in Gondor with her fairness and nobleness. However, her marriage ended up causing the kin-strife when the Gondorian elite wouldn't accept her son as a legitimate contender (spoiler: he wins in the end).

Second Age Tolkien Ladies

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
The Ruling Queens of Numenor:
Tar-Ancalimë, Tar-Telperiën, and Tar-Vanimeldë. Tar-Telperiën in particular was a "proud and willful ruler" who would not give up power until near her death (unlike other kings who gave it up much earlier).

Also, Tar-Míriel who SHOULD have been a Ruling Queen if her cousin hadn't forced her to marry him and stolen her throne (I want to wrap her up in a hug so much).

Also Inzilbêth and Lindórië, who are Tar-Míriel's foremothers - they were instrumental in Tar-Míriel's dad being among the Faithful and possibly allowing Elendil and the other Faithful a chance to flourish near the end.

First Age Tolkien Ladies

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Emeldir the Manhearted - Beren's mom. She would've preferred to stay to defend what was left of her homeland (after it was wiped out) but instead she took all that remained of the women, children, sick and brought them through many trials to safety.

Andreth - Wisewoman of Men. She's the only human we see call an elf out on their lordly behavior to humans. She also had a doomed love to an elf.

More Tolkien Ladies

(Anonymous) 2015-08-07 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Meássë - she's a Valar who appears in an earlier form of the Silmarillion. She was a warrior goddess. She and her brother joined the hunt against Morgoth.

Arien - the Sun. A maia who loved the golden tree of the Two Trees. She bathed in fire so she could steer the sun. Morgoth feared her.

Mellie from Scandal. Like pretty much everyone in that show, she's kind of a terrible person (holy shit, does that show ever have some unlikable protagonists), but I always found her pretty sympathetic (as sympathetic as any Scandal character can be anyway) and compelling even before they revealed that she had been raped by Fitz' father in the past in an obvious and hamhanded attempt to soften her character. Thanks show, but I already liked Mellie. Shoehorning rape into her backstory wasn't necessary

Captain Amelia from Treasure Planet. She's witty; she knows how to handle a gun, steer a ship, and run around the rigging in high heeled boots; she's smart but willing to take advice; and she's got a great design, to boot.

It's a pity she's only in about fifteen minutes of the movie, because I would watch a whole movie about her.

Yes, she's amazing!

Nephry Osborne from Tales of the Abyss. She's a minor character gameplay-wise (despite getting about as much screentime as the vastly more popular Peony), but story-wise, she's an incredibly important part of the Keterburg group (Jade, Peony, and Dist), and she gets left out of everything. I've developed a weird sort of protectiveness over her.

I mean, she's intelligent (was taken in for private classes along with her brother and Saphir, so she must be about on par with them), she's Jade's little sister and Peony's first (and possibly only) love, she kept Dist from dying in the snow, she's kept Keterburg from being exploited by nobles, there's a lot to work with here!

I just wish she'd at least show up in fanworks revolving around the Keterburg group, even if she's not the focus. :(

Kira Walker

[personal profile] caerbannog 2015-08-07 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay lemme introduce you to Kira Walker

She's described by the wanted radio calls as of "Indian descent"

She's a medic intern and suffers from being an idealist. She wants to cure the disease killing off humanity (babies pretty much don't survive birth)

She has cliche stoic protag "LEAVE ME AND RUN" moments and I'm a major sucker for when a lady protag gets to have this kind of cheesey trope.

She has nightmares from the more horrifying moments in the story. Which I agree, it went from perfectly fine dystopia to borderline horror book for a moment there. I found it pretty creepy, I'd have fucking nightmares too.

She's like 17 or something and manages to initiate non-lethal communication between Partials (biosynthetic human race) and humans.

Here's a trailer for the books

Charlene (Jane Curtin) from the Librarian movies/series. I love that woman so much. She's a tight-fisted, eminently practical old bureaucrat, but I love how she does her best to look out for Flynn in her own way (her showing up at his place drunk in 'Judas Chalice' to try and talk him out of his depression was so lovely), and bureaucrat or not she's perfectly willing to fight her way through Library sword in hand to protect what's hers. I also loved her panicky faces when Flynn loses it in 'Judas Chalice' as well. She's hilarious, and she works with Flynn and Judson so well. I really hope she comes back when S2 of the series happens.

Laurel Lance from Arrow. I don't understand the insane amount of hate her character gets. I certainly don't understand the insane amount of hate the actress who plays her gets just for playing the character.

I do agree that she is sometimes poorly written, but I honestly can't name a character from that show who isn't. Oliver is probably the one who is most consistently horrible and his character doesn't get nearly as much hate.

I think the thing I enjoy most about the Laurel character is that I see so much Dinah in her. She really feels like Black Canary. She's kind, warm, badass, selfless, and she always manages to pull through. Meanwhile, the Arrow version of Oliver is nothing like Green Arrow at all and is far more like Batman, for whatever reason.

Also, as someone coping with depression, her season two arc involving depression and addiction rang very true to me. I wish it had gotten more screentime and been put more at the forefront rather than the poorly done Deathstroke storyline, but I think that Katie Cassidy did an amazing job playing those emotions and that struggle. She really threw herself all into that storyline, even physically transforming herself by losing a shit ton of weight for the role.

(Naturally, when she lost all that weight, the trolls from the fandom went nuts with the body shaming, calling her all sorts of names, telling her that she was ugly, that she looked like an alien, I even saw one person say that they hoped she wasted away and died so that they didn't have to see her play Laurel anymore, which went so far over the line I remember feeling physically sick when I read that comment.)

I love Laurel! I think we may have even talked about her before together haha (or maybe there are just more Laurel/Arrow fans on fs than I realize). I totally agree with you about her season two arc. It was a massively upopular arc with a lot of fans, but I thought that it really made sense for her character even if it was hard to watch sometimes (not because it was poorly acted or written, but because it was hard to watch her spiral so far downwards) and Cassidy did a great job with it. I also like that it gave us some great scenes with Laurel's father.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: nearly every female character from Resident Evil (aka Biohazard).

God damn those are some of the most badass ladies of all time.

All the girls in Chrono Trigger. The more I think about them, the more awesome they are, especially because it doesn't feel like forced Strong Female Character stuff, they just happen to be cavewoman leaders of humanity who get thrown by robots into dinosaurs because that's who they are.
