Eh...I'm a woman of color too but at this point I'm kind of "Who gives a fuck?" you know?

I enjoy my white dude slash with stories by men featuring mainly white male actors and I just enjoy what I like. I don't go out of my way to hate on anything anyone else likes so I don't see why it's anyone else's business what I enjoy.

Live and let live.

I wouldn't be surprised if most of the things I like were written by white men, but that's because most of the popular or promoted mainstream shows are written by white men so it's a statistical thing? I rarely ever know who wrote things I like, so I doubt it's a bias in that way

Do people really look up who wrote what? I have no clue who the writers are of most of the media I like, am I alone and oblivious?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah absolutely

not even just as a political thing, or even just in fandom. There's a lot of people who pay a lot of attention to stuff like showrunners and writers' rooms and stuff like that.

see for instance joss whedon, stephen moffat, shonda rimes

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
But is a lot of people most people? Idk I feel like most people who aren't paying attention to that on purpose who only watch the shows have no clue, like me

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
oh yeah I have no idea about the relative proportions, and I doubt anyone does

but it's definitely a big enough thing for it to be a topic of conversation in fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-08-09 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I do pay attention to who writes and even directs shows and episodes because I'm just interested in that stuff. I also pay attention to shows created by women and non-whites just because they tend to be rarer and I like variety and I'm not white. I don't feel bad about watching and enjoying shows written by white men and don't think people should beat themselves up because of it, but I do feel disappointed that there isn't more variety so I do tend to be conscious of the disparity.

Sometimes I know vaguely who wrote this or that...but most the time I don't know all that much about them. (Unless they're quite popular or controversial and I learn from being in fandom.)

There are certain pieces of media where I know TPTB well, but that doesn't happen often.

Nope. I have zero idea who writes my favorite tv shows and/or movies, unless the writer is a 'big deal' and fanon is all over it. I'm ...totally oblivious to that.

Well, if you're worried about it, you could

Thank you for this! I'm already watching a lot of these shows anyway.

Don't best yourself up about that. It's good to be supportive of female creator but that doesn't mean you should like their stuff just because they are female.

Just like what you like.

It's not your fault that the showrunner of almost all TV shows/movies are white dudes. If you like it, you like it. Just try to be aware of shows/movies by POC and watch as much of it as it aligns to your interests.
