They knew she'd read the letter before dinner but didn't address it, and after she caught them in the library, there was time to grab and talk to her while everyone was searching for the twins. And when the cops were there surely Cecilia could have talked to Briony about her statement before the police hauled him off.

surely Cecilia could have talked to Briony about her statement before the police hauled him off. Yes, I'm sure that would have solved everything and made it all look like a simple misunderstanding to the classist police; why didn't Cecilia think of that?

If Briony had recanted her statement with the explanation that she had misread several earlier signs and Cecelia had been willing to admit to being in a sexual relationship with Robbie as soon as it happened, he might have been cleared quickly. I haven't read the book so I don;t know if this was tried.

Oh man, it does NOT work that way IRL, especially with the class politics ayrt mentioned. If Cecelia tried to recant her story, it would've been seen as her trying to save Robbie, not as her telling the truth. She'd get a pat on the head and a "there there now, dear, don't feel like you have to defend him."

*Briony, not Cecelia. Dammit.
