Re: What do you think of the community on fandomsecrets?

I haven't visited LJ for anything other than icons in quite a while. :( When I do think to see how an old community is doing or if a specific fandom has an active comm over there, I rarely find anything worth following. I'm sure some people stuck around, but it isn't the same sense of community; so many people moved on and I feel like people mostly hang around their own journals/flist.

Yea, that's exactly what the other anon was saying too...the back and forth. f!s isn't just about fandom, we talk about RL and have various discussion threads, sometimes extremely personal ones (asking for advice, or just wanting to talk about their problems), sometimes assorted, interesting ones (the confession threads, like you mentioned). Then there's the random threads (worst fast food experience fits) that are just fun to participate in, even if they don't always start a lot of discussion. (Hell, I even like "What did you have for dinner today?" or "What's your favorite food?" I love food, don't judge me.)

Because of the nature of f!s anyone can jump in, which is kind of nice because there's not as much pressure if you want to create your own thread. I don't do it as often as I'd like, but it's enjoyable!

It concerns me a little, but I think a lot of it's that F!S has high and low periods.

I'm hoping that's what it is! I know f!s has had highs and lows in the past, so maybe that's what's going on right now; perhaps we'll snap back. (The secret count this week has me feeling positive. Hopefully more people submitted secrets this week.)

AYRT - I was just thinking that part of the problem, imho, may be how restricted F!S is timewise. Because sometimes it's less that I don't have time to participate, and more that by the time I have a chance, all the flurry is over. Maybe some of that is due to how quiet it's gotten, I only came here within the past few years so for all I know threads went on for days, but it really seems you have to be here between 4ish and 7ish on weekends and 6:30ish-10 PM on weeknights, or you miss out. Whereas even with LJ comms you could at least participate within a day or two, if not more.

IA, I think that's part of it. I know there are days I don't make it here early and my comments are about the last in the threads and no one seems to be around. People don't seem to reply as much later in the evening (or almost at all on the next day).

Now, if you have a username and get notifications for your comments it's easier to get back to people, and I have at times spent days on a single conversation, replying back and forth, but in general...once the day is over, most people don't come back.

The only solution for that is just commenting on what you want, whenever you want, and hoping that other people will do the same. If more people were interested in longer conversations I'd be down with it too, but...you're right, people come and go. Time zones make things tricky for anyone who can't post right when the post goes up.

And honestly, I feel bad for people who DO want to be involved in discussion but miss it because of their time zone, or work, or whatever. I wish there was another way.
