Kath and Kim! Did you enjoy it? What was you fave episode? What were your feelings on the American version?

Glad it helped you out with deciphering accents.

Yes, very much. I don't have a single episode I dislike, so picking a fave is difficult. I will say though, all the season finales have been A++

I only ever saw one episode of the US version (the pilot I think?), and while I didn't hate it, it was like... why? Fun fact: even before I watched the original Kath & Kim, I was aware the US was doing a remake. I wasn't fond of the idea back then, and my feelings haven't changed. (I feel bad for Selma Blair because I like her and her career bombed after that.)

Just came here to say aaaay I'm Australian, hope you had fun with the local lingo while sorting out what was global English.

It took me like 2 seasons to even understand what footy franks are lol
so you can probably imagine all the fun I had to go through

I love the idea that some American is now fluent in bogan.

If they're ESL, unlikely to be USian?

Sorry, not American ;)
I'm from Northern Europe

Good on ya! As an Aussie I can only imagine how hard that would have been for you. I'm so glad you stuck with it.

Thanks! Yeah it took me a while (and it was pretty frustrating at first) but I'm glad I didn't stop.

I... never liked Kath and Kim, but then I don't like a lot of things, especially when it's comedy.

On the other hand, if you're ever stuck in Melbourne suburbia OP, at least you will understand the lingo.

(I have never been to Melbourne.)

I'm usually into dry British humor (like The Thick of It, Black Books, Green Wing, etc etc) and somehow K&K was right up my alley.

I'd love to visit Australia someday but I'm deathly afraid of the killer spiders. :D I'm also afraid of suburbs... there's something really creepy about them.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh lord! Killer spiders have been really oversold by Australians, believe me. I saw a dead redback once (I think it was one?), and that's about it.

As someone who moved to a Melbourne suburb recently, it seems so far a very cheerful place with nice cafes, bike trails, community centres and gum trees. I'm not here totally by choice, I prefer the inner city or the country, but I'm not so creeped out, never heard that take before, interesting!

I've... only ever watched half an episode of Kath & Kim, I know, terrible of me :P I'm more into British stuff than Australian!

Well speaking from experience with my NZ trip a couple of months ago, if you're doing the touristy thing, you might not have to deal with a lot of suburbia. The closest I got to suburbs was a big shopping centre in Auckland and going to the Weta Cave in Wellington, since Weta Studios has all but taken over Miramar.

Also, if you're in the city a lot, your likelihood of running into a dangerous spider is quite low. A hotel maintaining even a minimum of cleanliness would keep them away and you probably won't be inspecting dark corners where redbacks might set up a web in, or Sydney North Shore backyards funnelwebs might hide in.

And if you act cautious on sight of a spider, keeping your distance, you're fine. (And sometimes the big, hairy spider that scares the crap out of people when they find on on their wall is simply a Hunstman - harmless to humans.)

You'll like Melbourne then, it's generic city and not suburbs in the cbd XD and killer spiders aren't that common. Just...don't pick random spiders up. You'll mostly be either city or rural if you're doing the tourist thing.

That's said my suburb isn't creepy so much as boring. Which I like, keep the exciting stuff away from where I sleep pls!. It had walking trails and a donut shop and history tours. The neighbours are all right, 50% bogans and 50% bogan immigrants XD
