Haha as much as I love the musical (was underwhelmed by the movie though tbh), I am mostly referring to the actual book. I don't think the musical version of Jean Valjean was ever convincingly a bad guy. Okay, he's never evil in the book either, but there's definitely a much bigger sense of redemption.

I agree with you. In the musical, he what? Steals twice? First the bread that got him locked up and then the silver from the priest. And then he spends the rest of his life trying to do good. Not nearly as much room for redemption. I still love that song as part of my general love of redemption stories though.
