Washington DC, I Am In You. Help.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-08-11 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Well I'm technically staying in Arlington but close enough. I'm down here on a research trip for about a week. I could use some tips!

What are the good places to eat that aren't awkward alone? What are some can't-miss things to do BESIDES the Smithsonian (I did a bunch of museums last time). Does one ever stop snickering at "Foggy Bottom?" Where can I berate a senator?

I was there awhile ago, have you done all the tourist stuff already then? I loved the Library of Congress and a couple of the main things purely for the gorgeous architecture.

You should probably just stick to your hotel room. I say that on behalf of all peoples of the District.

You never, ever stop laughing at Foggy Bottom. Ever.

I always suggest the Air and Space Museum, but it sounds like you might have already checked that out if you did a lot of museums! What sort of things are you generally into doing? If you're into shopping (or just window shopping), Tysons Galleria is awesome. Chinatown is also pretty great, and if you're not afraid to go to a place considered by many to be kind of "seedy" (though I've personally never had trouble there), Eastern Market is a lot of fun to traipse through.

I also like to direct people to the US Botanic Garden, which is all kinds of beautiful. And if you're into music/theatre/etc., there's usually something nice going on at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts, so check out dates on that for sure.

you were probably joking about this but it's totally possible to arrange a meeting with your congresspeople, and it's actually kind of cool. Make sure they're in town and either find out if they do walk-ins, or send a fax to their office asking for a meeting.

I've done walking tours in Boston and New Orleans, and they're a lot of fun:

How have I lived here so long and never thought Foggy Bottom was a funny name? I guess just because I hear it all the time.

I agree the botanical garden is nice. So is the Dumbarton Oaks garden, but you have to pay to go to the less wild part, and it's probably better in the spring anyway.

There's also the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, which are free and have Amazonian water lilies (though they weren't that big when I saw them last). And other water lilies, but most of them bloom earlier in the summer.

What are you researching, by the way?

Arlington! That's where I was born! (though we didn't actually live there, place is expensive as fuck!) and my cousin lives there now, pays half again as much as I do in rent for a tiny room. Cost of living in northern Virginia is ridiculous. Still have a lot of family in the area and I was out there in Fairfax just last week for a funeral. But my parents moved away when I was a kid largely because of the traffic.

I went to DC a few times as a kid but I don't have many memories. Wish I could say something helpful. (I'd really like to visit there again now that I'm an adult. If we go out there to see family on an actual vacation this year maybe I'll suggest a day trip for those interested.)
