Singing preferences

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Do you have discernable tastes in singing voices? How do they compare to your general voice preferences? Any singing style pet peeves?

I have a slight preference for male singers and masculine voices in general. Less (obvious) vibrato and an overall style of singing I consider more masculine, not lower voices. I like singers who can reach high notes but don't spend most of their time up there. I don't like syrupy voices (Dolly Parton, Duffy). A specific voice I've been trying to figure out my dislike for lately is the singer from American Authors. It's just grating somehow.

I have a pretty strong preference for female vocalists. I like more whispery, dreamy sounding stuff, I guess too.

Really depends on the genre, but looking at most of my collection, I guess I mostly prefer robust, strong singing voices. Which is mostly dudes but not always. Can't stand cutesy.

I love deep voices, female or male.

I absolutely hate female singers that belt out every note. If you drag out a song to the point it's more than twice as long as its original length, you're overdoing it. I know I'm in the minority here, but it's so grating to me. I don't have this problem with male singers (probably because their voices are lower and don't irritate me as much).

Have to agree with you. Doesn't matter to me if it's live/unedited or studio polished, I don't like it. Probably not relevant, but I'm female.

Agreed. I hate belting and I hate singers who embellish EVERYTHING. There is such a thing as too much.

Male or female, for me, it just depends on the singer and the song. I don't mind people doing it...when there's a point. When they know WHY they're doing it, and are not just doing it to be "cool" or to be the next American Idol.

According to iTunes most of my faves are women or higher toned men (idk what this is called sorry)

I can't stand Lorena McKennitt's voice. A short e always comes out as "aaa." Like "Bess, the landlord's daughter" in "The Highwayman" sounded more like "Bass"--the fish, not the vocal range.

Not a fan of whispery, cooing female voices, or schmaltzing up straightforward stuff.

I love divas. All of them. I love their vocal ranges and I think they are supremely talented. 90's divas are all my favorites and it makes me sad that talent like this is under appreciated in pop music now.

The only person whose voice I consistently dislike is Britney Spears.

I hate:

-Stereotypical female j-pop singers who try to sound like they are 8-year-olds with a stuffy nose.

-Diva embellishment. Just sing the notes in the song, don't go up and down and all around

-Breathing during singing. Nothing annoys me more than hearing singers take loud, huffy breaths in the middle of a song. Argh

-Shotgun vibrato for men
