It's worth pointing out that - although soul is historical absolutely a black genre - there's a long tradition of the genre being taken up in Britain, often in novel ways. See stuff like northern soul. Not saying that's necessarily where Adele was coming from, but it's a thing that definitely exists.

As another example northern rsoul was hugely influential on bands like Dexys Midnight Runners which I mention mostly because I love Dexys.

Huh, I didn't know that! That's definitely interesting, and I appreciate the mention. I'll have to look into it more, especially the band you mentioned. :)
