Yes, same. I replied above regarding Adele and soul music. A friend introduced me to her music, with a link that didn't include picture or anything. Since soul music is historically and culturally black, I figured... yeah. I'm with you about being torn, for the same reasons. I suppose part of it for me is also how big a name she's become, because I'm trying to think of a black soul musician (especially a woman) who has hit it big in recent years, and failing. I'm sure there are some amazing musicians, but I can't think of anyone who has the name recognition that Adele has achieved. I've seen some people claim Janelle Monae as a soul musician, but she's struck me as much more jazz influenced than soul. I mean, I'm not an expert or anything, but that's how her music sounds to me. It just is... weird and uncomfy to me that it's a white British woman who has huge name recognition in a genre that originated with black artists in the US during the Civil Rights Movement, esp. in combination to what I mentioned above about the absence of similarly recognized black women soul musicians.

And add onto all that how much of America's music history is characterized by white people making famous music that black people invented...rock, disco, etc. Hiphop is different because I think (I'm saying "I think" because I'm not really studied on this, but this is my general observation) black people made it famous, so it's much easier to see what's going on when white people start getting famous doing the same thing.

And I don't think white people should be barred from making hiphop. I just think the way some have done it lately is a bit disrespectful. But it's hard to explain why I think that, exactly, since I don't think any individual owns a particular style of expression, and I don't see white culture as being as well-defined a thing as black culture, and I'm not sure if I'm being racist, or progressive, or just overthinking the whole damn thing. :/
