I honestly read very few spoilers and have only played like 5 minutes of the demo and then got bored, and thus do not have an opinion either way. Your approach is A++, though. I can udnerstand the frustration of feeling screwed over by canon, but PW fandom is acting like it's the apocalypse or something.

My head is full of AU canon, too. My favourite is imagining the Judge and his Canadian brother as an ill-matched buddy cop team.
