Do you think it's in human nature to want or need someone else acceptable to hate?

Assuming hating bigots counts.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think people want or need something to hate, but I do think that hating is something to which people are generally prone.

This. It's like envy, in my opinion. I don't think people WANT to be envious of others, but it's very very easy to be.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
yep

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it is. It seems like people in any group always look for people who are okay to hate, bully or look down on. Someone to look down on to make yourself look better.

I've seen people in so many different places to do, especially in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a thing for hateful people. Hateful people need an acceptable target to direct their hate at.

Remember the "I'm bullying the RIGHT people" anon from a few days ago? That's exactly what I'm talking about.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The right people being the ones that overreacted so hilariously like the 2013 SJWs and the Sperg-rights movement. Those guys were fantastically funny when you poked them.

You're not really helping your case here.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So...that's what you do for fun.

Wow you sound like a loser.

People like to feel self-righteous and superior. Of that, the tendency towards hate is born.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think if someone is hurt badly enough, it is human to hate in return.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Scapegoating has a long and bloody history, so yes.

I think we naturally have a somewhat tribal mentality but hatred of outsiders has to be fanned and flamed..

Hate is too stronng, maybe, but I do think we have a tendency to get into an us-versus-them mentality.

Nah. I don't need to hate anyone, and if it was "human nature," then everyone would need to.

I think it is. It's all about othering people. Even hating bigots is a form of othering, because they go against the grain of what's acceptable in a given society.

The problem is that people are easily manipulated, especially in groups, and using "others" as your manipulation tool is very, very effective.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-08-12 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Unequivocally. The Us vs. Them mentality is the reason we have countries, friends, organizations... you could make a reasonable argument that it's the reason we have culture at all.

It's very difficult to hate no one at all for any reason. It takes actual work to try to understand different worldviews and accept that the ones that offend you are valid and "right" for someone else. This isn't work that anyone is willing to put in for absolutely everything unless they are being motivated to do so.

I don't want to or need to but varying levels of dislike and hate are going to happen when I come into conflict with someone.

Hate, no, not necessarily. But I do think it is human nature to want to categorize people and to find a way to consider ourselves part of a group that is better than some other group.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.
