Predetermined future stories

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
What is your favourite and least favourite stories where your future is predetermined by some arbitrary reason? Idk where I’m going with this, just wondering how common they are:
i.e
Divergant
Anne McCaffrey and dragon *color*
Dinotopia and which dinosaur picks you?

Harry Potter houses, I guess, because they're pretty loose and wide in their application

There's so much stock taken into them...well, until the last two books. It's kind of unsettling, and the fact that this is the only Wizarding School in Britain...your already small population now has 3/4ths of them being wary toward the remaining quarter because of a hat and old prejudices.

It's more like two quarters of the population are mutually suspicious of each other (Gryffindor and Slytherin)

And probably would have been for social reasons anyway if you hadn't split things up

But yes, from any realistic point of view, it's silly

I don't if I have one that one might claim is arbitrary. I do love time loop stories where your future is determined by time travel shenanigans and you (or others) influence in the past. Think "12 Monkeys" and "Predestination." (did anyone see this movie?! I feel like the only one.)

Not a huge fan of soul mate AUs, but I can abide them on ocassion if they are done well.

See also " - All You Zombies - ". And also like a million other Heinlein stories.

Mostly about having sex with your own mother / yourself.

Dude had issues.

I need to read that.

Okaaaaaay, you may regret this, but here are the books (I forget the order you're supposed to read them in, but ultimately that doesn't really matter, given the non-linear/multiverse nature of the narrative)

Methuselah's Children
To Sail Beyond The Sunset
The Cat Who Walks Through Walls (though mostly only at the end).
The Number of the Beast (Lost in Space in the multiverse with selfcest -- yeah -- plus I think Maureen actually makes an appearance here too, not just the clones)
The other Second Age of RAH book that was actually the first one I read after the juveniles, which had me going "Uhhhhhhh...." was I Will Fear No Evil. Tho' in retrospect it's prolly not as bad as I remember it being at the time LOL.

No don't read any of these they all suck

Just read All You Zombies (I'll stop stylizing it correctly since it's a fucking pain in the ass)

That was the Second Age of Heinlein. Otherwise known as RAH's personal "Crazy Years."

...or maybe it all really was a satire on libertarianism. So I try to convince myself, as I eternally side-eye Lazarus....

"- All You Zombies -" is not from his crazy years, and it's literally about simultaneously fucking your mother, your father, your child, and your self

I mean, those elements were present for a long time, even if they didn't predominate like they did in the crazy years

Eh, true.

So, not to spoil the movie, but since we are already talking about it, that's basically the plot of "Predestination."

Re: Predetermined future stories

(Anonymous) 2015-08-11 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
According to Wikipedia it's actually an adaptation of the short story

so, we've been talking about the same thing the whole time

whomp whomp

Lmao. I really liked that movie and I enjoyed the twist very much. She was her child and lover and her greatest enemy and it was pretty great.
