which she wasn't Aerith in either.

And not "American" - the same translation was used for the NA and European releases.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
She was according to the game manual and every piece of merchandise.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
No. She was "Aeris" in official merchandise as well. And Aeris in the English manual.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Again, we are talking about the original game, not the shitty English translation full of mistakes and mistranslations.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
...Okay. I've actually played the original Japanese game. Guess what. It's in Japanese. She's not Aerith in it. Promotional materials in both Japan and abroad had naming inconsistencies. Doesn't change the fact that her official English name in the original game is.... wait for it... Aeris.

I suppose companies aren't allowed to fix their mistakes then! Good to know.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Companies can do whatever they want. Just like fans can prefer her name to be one or the other. Shocking, I know, but the argument never was "BAN SQUARE FROM USING AERITH".

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
So tired of this pointless debate. Either some stuck up nostalgia fags trying to argue it should be Aeris, or more rational people pushing Aerith.
I'm a nostalgia fag too, but sometimes you just gotta accept things for what they are. They fucked up the spelling back then and decided to fix it up in every upcoming related works. End of story.
Also IIRC Nomura wrote it "Aerith" as soon as the early concept art and sketches. I think he intended the spelling to be a reference to "Earth", given the character's link to the planet. That also the Japanese spelling ("earisu" in romaji). And before you ask, Japanese are using "su" when translating foreign words with "th" because there's simply no other character close enough in Japanese. Knowing that, I would have tried to prevent any misunderstanding by also writing the character's name with western letters in concept art - exactly what Nomura did.

But hey, even when presented with solid facts, nostalgia fags will nostalgia. That's what they do - fuck the creator's vision, right ?

"nostalgia fags" - okay, so you're the 4chan spammer

"or more rational people pushing Aerith." lmao have you actually been reading this thread? And how it started because a butthurt Aerith fan literally called anyone who prefers Aeris autistic?

The debate is not that the name Aerith hasn't been around - though especially back then, name romanization has a hugely inconsistent thing in both English and Japanese materials. Nor do you need to tell me how Japanese works, I actually know, believe it or not.

The point is that she is Aeris is in the original game, for nearly two decades in every release of the original game she's been Aeris. Therefore, fans are allowed to identify her as Aeris. Especially in the context of the original game, which she's played a very famous part of an extremely successful game. She literally is Aeris in the original game that people love and play, there is nothing invalid about considering that to be the character's name.

Also I'm lmao at your "fuck the creator's vision". You do know that Nomura was only the character designer in FFVII, right, not the "creator"? (no, that doesn't mean he invented the characters or even their names) And since being in charge of the Compilation, he's fucked it up, retconned it, and literally inserted Gackt into it. I'm all abroad the "fuck Nomura's vision" train.

Thanks for proving the point.

Accusing others of spamming when you have been samefagging so hard this discussion with your absurd logic is hilarious.Take the hint: you're the only one defending 'Aeris'. But you're probably a troll, no one in their right mind would waste their time writing 20 or 30 comments discussing a stupid name.

Also, nice moving the goalpost. No one has ever said that you aren't allowed to use Aeris, just that it's the wrong romanization.
