That picture is HILARIOUS!!! I agree with you about a lot of OT3s, though. I think they're exceptionally hard to write. One-off threesomes, sure, but long-term poly relationships where the people all live together... not so much. Possibly because that sort of relationship is harder to navigate and also do not have a lot of media exposure so most people haven't seen the variations in how it might work.

While I haven't seen the POC shoehorned into a pairing to get SJW points, I have seen a much of using a character to self-insert the author's fantasy. I don't really mind those fics much, but I can see how it might be annoying.

Yeah, I've given up on Tony/Pepper/someone else fic because it's always about Tony and the other person (usually a dude, occasionally Darcy, lol). If you don't want Pepper around, just write her out.

I still love Tony/Pepper/Rhodey, because that has a lot more to build on with the Pepper/Rhodey axis, and they're really adorable (and angsty) together.

This is is my day for thinking that secrets are about me until I come to some vital sentence that lets me off the hook.

I'm definitely guilty of writing ot3s where two of the characters have never even talked to each other in canon, but not of including random women or pocs in my ot3s just for inclusivity.

I've read so many good poly fics that I forget that they annoy some people. I love poly fics so much.

Well, you're reading the wrong ones.

There are several fandoms where OT3s are very popular (like Leverage and White Collar). It's probably different across different fandoms, but usually in the fics I read, it's pretty obvious the author likes all three characters, even if, in some, the author has a favorite of the three.

I don't have a problem with OT3 fics themselves, but I hate hate HATE when it gets tagged as (OTP) on tumblr, shows up in my tracked tag, and if I don't notice that it's (someone else's OT3 containing those two characters), best case scenario is I get really thrown and hit the backbutton, but... There are some cases where I just get really put off by an OT3 fic where I ship two of the characters, regardless of how I feel about the third, and it's, like, a visceral reaction.

(love the pic, though, haha)

+100 I hate it when people tag their OT3 fic with (my OTP) on AO3, too. I'm there for fic about my OTP, and it really clutters up the tag.

This is one of the things that it is legitimately completely trivial to filter out on AO3

Like, literally just get the feed ID for the OT3, and maybe for the legs of the OT3 that you don't ship, and filter those out in the "search within works" field, it's extremely easy.

Those squirrels look so happy omg...

I agree, OP. OT3s feels more like it's OTP+Whoever the invited to the threesome. I personally have a hard time shipping OT3s because it feels like the third person is just shoehorned in as the third wheel. No bueno.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why I despise OT3's as well.

Yeah like, there's no dynamic between the characters because they are usually linked by just one character. Like you can imagine A/B/C having a threesome, but can you imagine A/C getting along outside of B? And so on and so forth. Like I said, OTP+1.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
back in the Gundam Wing days I used to ship 13x5x6 and the whole point of the threesome was treize somehow managing to get wufei and zechs to hook up because he wanted either but they didn't care much for each other...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I am 100% with you, OP. Most OT3 fic I've read is just there for the porn, so it feels extremely forced. I'm not a fan of OT3's. Not to mention that polyamory is kind of romanticized as being very easy for anyone to fall into, when it's really not at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, OT3s can't generally get married, as well as being judged quite heavily, so there are practical reasons why people avoid it in real life. You can't blame the polyamorus for wanting it a little more romanticised in their fics. If that's not to your taste, it will come across like the fics are being unrealistic.
